Arizona Temporary Health Insurance Plans

A temporary health insurance in Arizona can come in very handy, especially for people who are in between jobs waiting for their new employer to provide them group health insurance, and whose worry is about not having any protection while still unemployed. Having non-continuous health insurance coverage is common in the United States. This is for the reason that most people rely on their employers for group health insurance, and the instability of most jobs is the main threat to having continuous health insurance coverage.  Individual health insurance policies, may it be temporary or extended, can be expensive in most cases.

Health Insurance Type

There are several health insurance companies in Arizona that offers temporary health insurance as either indemnity or major medical (traditional), HMO, Point-of-Service, or Preferred Provider Organization health insurance type. Selecting the best temporary health insurance also involves selecting the health insurance type that you are accustomed to and most familiar with and which covers most, if not all, of your health  coverage needs.

Health Coverage

The primary coverage of a comprehensive temporary health insurance may include doctor’s office visits, routine exams, lab tests and x-ray, pre-natal and post-natal care, injuries from an accident, most illnesses and many more. Insurance companies offering temporary health insurance in Arizona would usually provide a list of cases that will or may be covered by the health insurance policy.

Pre-existing Condition

Note that for people with pre-existing conditions, insurance companies may have a pre-existing condition exclusion. This means that the person must not have had any hospital visit, treatment, or medical procedure related to his pre-existing condition within the duration provided by the insurance company. This is the part which most people with temporary health insurance worry about. The state of Arizona has many health insurance companies with different pre-existing condition exclusion, but most temporary health insurance plans has a pre-existing condition exclusion of five years. So any medical condition that had been treated within this period is not covered by the health insurance.

Arizona Health Insurance Companies per City

The coverage of temporary health insurance may be as short as 30 days and may be extended to up to 12 months. Remember that most of these health insurance policies are non-terminable but can be extended. So careful consideration of the duration of your coverage is very important.

Alternatives to Temporary Health Insurance

There are a few alternative options available in the State of Arizona that provide people with more convenient and cheaper ways of getting temporary health insurance coverage than getting it directly from private health insurance companies. These options are especially for people who just recently lost their job and their health insurance plan with it, individuals who recently changed from a dependent status, and people with a limited income.

COBRA or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act allows individuals to retain the group health insurance they had with their employer. This also applies to people who are no longer qualified as dependents of someone’s health insurance policy. The purpose of COBRA is to ensure continuous health insurance coverage and to allow people to switch from one health insurance policy to another without intervals. Here are the qualifications for COBRA in Arizona:

·You previous employer must have at least 20 employees.
·You need to be covered by the company’s health insurance plan either as an employee, or spouse or child of the covered employee.
·The termination of you group health insurance coverage must have a valid and qualified reason:
oFor the employee: voluntary or involuntary loss of job
oFor the employee’s spouse: loss of employee’s coverage due to qualified reason, legal separation, or death of the covered employee.
oFor the dependent child: loss of employee’s coverage due to qualified reason, or change of status, e.g. employed, that cause loss of coverage

If a person elects COBRA to retain his group health insurance coverage, he will have to carry the burden of paying the full premium of coverage. And more often than not, this can be very expensive.

COBRA Financial Assistance through the Arizona Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit

The HCTC works by providing a federal income tax credit to people who lost their job and who need financial assistance in keeping up with their individual or family health insurance plans. One qualification would be to have a qualified health insurance. And if you had elected COBRA, you can get a 65 percent credit on your monthly premium. This is either paid directly to the private health insurance company or can also be claimed as tax credit at the end of each year. You can call HCTC at 1-866-628-HCTC or visit their website at www.irs.gov/individuals for more information.
