Arkansas Temporary Health Insurance Plans
Guide to Finding Temporary Health Coverage

Temporary health insurance plans in Arkansas are created for people who need short-term insurance coverage while waiting for group or a permanent health insurance to take effect. These are usually people who are in between jobs or have recently lost their group health insurance coverage. Newly graduates may also need temporary health insurance for continuous health protection while seeking for employment since they are no longer qualified for coverage from their family’s health insurance.

The state of Arkansas has different insurance companies that provide temporary health insurance and offers a few alternatives for people who are faced with the challenge of looking for a temporary health insurance plan that is both comprehensive enough to cover their needs and which is also affordable enough for their budget to accommodate.  Though there are a few private health insurance companies offering cheap temporary health insurance, the coverage may be limited and there can also be a few exceptions.

Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion

One of the main things that a person looking for temporary health insurance needs to know about is each health insurance plan’s pre-existing condition exclusion. If your previous group health insurance plan covers your pre-existing health condition, this may not be the case for your new health insurance plan. Private insurance companies have different policies regarding this issue. They may require as much as a 5-year pre-existing condition exclusion which means that the insured cannot file for any health insurance claim for medical bills related to his pre-existing condition for 5 years. Since temporary health insurance only gives short-term health coverage, any pre-existing condition may not be covered.

Asthma is a popular example of a pre-existing condition. If you are looking for a temporary health insurance plan, and you or someone in the family has asthma, any medical cost related to this may not be covered within the exclusion period declared in your health insurance policy. Complications caused by a pre-existing condition may have limited or no coverage at all. It will all depend on the health insurance policy offered to you by your health insurance company

Temporary Health Insurance Types and Coverage

Temporary health insurance follows the same classification as any regular-termed health insurance plan. You can chose to have an indemnity or major medical plan, HMO, PPO, or point-of-service health insurance type depending on your preference. Most temporary health insurance also has the basic coverage for check-ups and doctor’s office visits, injuries from an accident, illness, children’s health care, post-natal and pre-natal care and lab tests and health examination. Maternity coverage may be included in more comprehensive temporary heath insurance plan. Dental care may also be covered. So it’s important to make careful comparison with every temporary health insurance quote you get from each health insurance company.

Alternative Methods of Getting Temporary Health Insurance

The state of Arkansas has a few alternatives for its citizens looking for temporary health insurance coverage. These are very beneficial especially to people who have recently lost their job, had a change in dependent status or who have been denied coverage for a certain pre-existing condition.

Arkansas has high-risk pool.
The Arkansas Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool is a state program created to provide comprehensive health insurance to people classified as “insurable” by most health insurance companies. People with pre-existing condition are most of the time provided with incomplete health insurance coverage with a long pre-existing condition exclusion period. But high risk pools are not intended to solely cater the needs of the indigent population with high health coverage demands. The annual deductible for high-risk pool can be from $1000 to $10,000 depending on the plans coverage. You can contact Arkansas Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool at 1-800-285-6477 for more information.

COBRA applies in Arkansas as it does in all states. COBRA or the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act is a feral law that allows individuals and even families to retain the group health insurance coverage that they had with a previous employer. This is not limited to the employee alone. But any dependent can also elect COBRA to retain his health insurance coverage.

COBRA provides temporary health insurance while the individual is still searching for a new employer to acquire group health insurance from or if he is still in the process of finding a regular health insurance policy. The employee must have lost his job for qualified reasons: either voluntarily or involuntarily. The spouse of the employee can elect COBRA in the incident of the qualified employee’s death or legal separation. The dependent child can also elect COBRA if he had a change in status, e.g. newly graduate seeking for employment.

Financial Assistance through the Arkansas Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit

Electing COBRA to retain group health insurance or getting health insurance through high-risk pool can be a bit costly. In the case of COBRA, the insured would have to pay for the full amount of the premium, instead of the employer shouldering half of it. The Arkansas Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit or HCTC program provides financial assistance for people with qualified health insurance coverage. It will pay 65 percent of the health insurance premium. This is either applied by directly paying it to the insurance company or by getting it as tax credit at the end of the year. For more information about HCTC, you may contact them at 1-866-628-HCTC.
