A Guide to Finding Short-Term Health Protection

Finding Temporary Health Insurance in California
For people who live in California, or in any other state for that matter, finding temporary health insurance is a difficult challenge after either losing coverage from the group health insurance provided by a previous employer or losing dependent status on someone’s health insurance coverage. More and more people are now beginning to realize the importance of having continuous health insurance coverage. Almost 82 percent of the population in California has health insurance, and 60 percent of this gets their health insurance plan from an employer. Though the economy has improved in the past few years after the economic depression, many people are still losing their jobs everyday, either because of company closure or workforce reduction.

Coverage and Cost
Coverage and cost are the two most important things to keep in mind when selecting a temporary health insurance plan. Though it only serves as a short-term health protection, it is still important to have everything that you would commonly get from a regular-termed health insurance policy. A few of the basic coverage that a temporary health insurance must have is coverage for doctor’s office visits and consultation, routine health examination, laboratory tests, hospitalization and treatment due to illness or accident and a few other basic medical needs. Maternity coverage may sometimes be included in some temporary health insurance plan. But if not, pre-natal and post natal care coverage is something that you might just want to look for if you’re expecting to go in labor within the effectivity period of your temporary health insurance plan.

The Difference between Temporary and Extended Heath Insurance

The only difference between temporary health insurance in California, or in other states, from the regular heath insurance we are more familiar with is the duration of the coverage. Temporary health insurance has, most of the time, the same coverage as the long-termed health insurance. It comes either as an indemnity or major medical, HMO, PPO, point-of-service health insurance type. But temporary health insurance can be more sensitive to pre-existing conditions than extended health insurance.

Pre-existing Health Condition Exclusion

Health insurance companies have different pre-existing health condition exclusions. This is the period of time wherein the cost related to a pre-existing health condition will not be covered by the health insurance policy. Most health insurance plans have a pre-existing condition exclusion of 18 to 36 months depending on the health insurance policy. And since temporary health insurance can only cover as far as 12 months, protection and coverage for a pre-existing health condition may be insufficient, if not totally absent.

But the state offers alternatives to people looking for temporary health insurance in California and at the same time sufficient coverage to all of their health insurance needs.

Alternative Options in California
According to Status and Heath Condition

For the individual who recently lost his job and his group health insurance along with it…
Through COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) and State Continuation Coverage, a newly dismissed employee can elect to retain the coverage of the group health insurance plan provided by his previous employers. This serves as his temporary health insurance plan while waiting for a new employer to provide him with health insurance.

Qualifications:

·Your previous employer must have at least 20 employees, but if there was less you can qualify for state continuation coverage which works much like COBRA
·You must be amongst the contributing and covered employees of the company’s group health insurance
·You had either voluntarily or involuntary lost your job and not due to severe misbehavior

For the individual who had a recent change in dependent status like the newly graduate seeking for employment and the legally separated or the dependents of an employee who recently lost his group health…

Through COBRA, the dependents of an employee can also choose to retain the coverage that they had with the employee’s group health insurance, whether the primary member has lost his group health insurance coverage due to him no longer connected with the company or the dependent no longer qualifies due to policy rules, e.g. legal separation.

Benefits of COBRA

·For people with a pre-existing condition, retaining group health insurance through COBRA does not refresh your pre-existing condition exclusion. So you can have the complete medical care for you pre-existing condition without worrying of having to wait again.
·COBRA can retain your health insurance coverage for up to a year, but this may be extended depending on you medical needs.

For people with pre-existing conditions…

California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program provides health insurance to people who are considered to be uninsurable:
·If you were denied health insurance coverage for the past 12 months
·If your current health insurance plan is proven to be insufficient for you medical needs

Qualifications:

·You need to be a California resident, or someone who had high-risk pool coverage from another state.
·You are not eligible for COBRA or any group health insurance provided by an employer

California Major Risk Medical Insurance Program provides complete coverage to all medical needs related to a pre-existing condition. The insured will only have a short 90-day pre-existing condition exclusion if he was enrolled in a HMO or PPO health insurance plan, and the plan can be extended as long as the insured pays his premium.
