Finding Alternatives and Financial Assistance

Private health insurance companies offer temporary health insurance in Iowa to people who had lost their eligibility to a group health insurance. This can be an employee who just lost his job or an individual who lost his dependent status. For whatever the reason for losing health insurance, it's important to ensure an uninterrupted health protection. Temporary health insurance can be bought from a private health insurance company, or it can also be acquired through other means. The state of Iowa gives its citizens the assurance of having enough options to choose from.

Private Health Insurance Companies

The cost of having temporary health insurance may indeed be less compared to having long-term health insurance, but the coverage may also be restricted. Basic coverage for temporary health insurance commonly includes medical check-ups and doctor's office visits, hospitalization due to illness and injuries caused by accidents, medical test and diagnostic procedures like x-ray and MRI. It will not include coverage for any pre-existing health condition. Unless this is the case, getting temporary health insurance from private insurance companies may be a feasible idea. But for people with pre-existing health condition, the state of Idaho offers alternative options.

COBRA

COBRA is a federal law that allows individuals and their dependents to retain the group health insurance they had with a previous employer. This is available to people who were employed to a company with more than 20 employees. The advantage of electing COBRA over getting temporary health insurance from a private health insurance company is that the insured will have more chances of getting sufficient coverage for his pre-existing health condition. In most health insurance plans, getting coverage for a pre-existing condition may require a little patience. Pre-existing condition exclusion is a popular and common implementation amongst health insurance companies which denies coverage to any pre-existing condition for a certain period of time. If the individual had already completed his pre-existing condition exclusion with his group insurance plan, getting an extension through COBRA will not refresh this. He is entitled to having the same health benefits and coverage.

Iowa State Continuation Coverage

People employed to a company with less than 20 employees, on the other hand, are also entitled to getting an extension on their previous group health insurance coverage. The system works the same with COBRA and the person will also receive the same benefits and coverage that he had with his previous group health insurance plan.

Iowa Conversion Policy

Iowa conversion policy applies to people who had lost their job and their group health insurance coverage for qualified reasons. It will provide the same coverage as what the previous group health insurance included, but in different levels. The cost may be higher than the price of the group health insurance but the insured will no longer have to go through another pre-existing condition exclusion and the coverage cannot be involuntarily discontinued if the insured gets terribly sick. The person needs to have had exhausted COBRA or state continuation coverage before becoming eligible to get health insurance through conversion policy.

Financial Assistance through Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit

The Health Coverage Tax Credit (HCTC) provides financial assistance to people by covering 65 percent of the health insurance cost. This can either be claimed at the end of each year through tax return or have it directly paid to the qualified health insurance plan. COBRA, state continuation plan and conversion policy are all qualified health insurance programs. For more information about Federal Health Tax Credit, you can contact the IRS by calling 1-866-628-HCTC.
