Louisiana Temporary Health Insurance Plans

Finding temporary health insurance in the state of Louisiana is not limited to buying a policy from a private health insurance company, nor are you limited to what the plans include. Temporary health insurance plans would usually have limited coverage, and with a few restrictions that may render the coverage insufficient for a person's medical needs. The usual coverage of a basic temporary health insurance will include medical check-ups and doctor's office visits, medical diagnosis and exams such as x-ray and MRI, and hospitalization due to illness or injury caused by an accident.

Who needs temporary health insurance?

For people living in Louisiana who had recently lost their job, they would find it a necessity to get temporary health insurance in Louisiana for continuous and uninterrupted health coverage. This will also include individuals who had lost their dependent status due to policy exclusions, e.g. the new graduate seeking employment and the legally separated. These are generally the people who had lost their group health insurance coverage and are waiting for a new group health insurance to take them in.  Some temporary health insurance offered by private health insurance companies may have the same coverage as the previous group health insurance plan. But then again, there are a few restrictions and limitations.


From Private Health Insurance Companies
?Temporary health insurance bought from a private health insurance company may have the same benefits and coverage as the individual's previous group health insurance plan.
?The cost can be more expensive than the previous group health insurance premium since the individual was only responsible for paying a fraction of the health insurance cost. But there are temporary health insurance plans offered at discounted rates when bought for a longer term period.
?The term can be extended as needed and it can be converted into a regular individual or family health insurance plan.
?Temporary health insurance will not give any health coverage to preexisting health conditions.

FYI: A pre-existing health condition is any illness acquired prior to applying for the health insurance plan. Most health insurance companies would consider an illness as a pre-existing condition if it was acquired 5 years from application. Genetic condition cannot be considered as a preexisting condition, but with a few exceptions depending on the health insurance policy and the state's current laws.

A pre-existing condition exclusion, on the other hand, is the period of time from the beginning of the health plan wherein any medical cost directly or indirectly related to the insured's preexisting condition will not be given coverage.

A few states have laws prohibiting private health insurance companies from implementing a pre-existing condition exclusion or totally denying an individual of health insurance due to his pre-existing health condition. Unfortunately, the state of Louisiana does not have this.

Through COBRA
?COBRA allows individuals and their dependents to retain coverage provided by a previous group health insurance plan.
?It's available for people employed in a company with a workforce of no less than 20 employees.
?The employer will be liable to informing the recently dismissed employee of his right to elect cobra.
?The employer or a dependent will have 60 days to decide whether to elect COBRA.
?It's also available to dependents who had been disqualified for coverage do to a change in status such as legal separation.
?Electing COBRA will mirror the same coverage provided by the previous group health insurance plan.
?If the previous health plan provided coverage for your preexisting health condition, retaining it through COBRA will not change this. But if a pre-existing condition exclusion is yet to be completed, the insured will have to complete this but it will not be refreshed.

FYI: Electing COBRA will mean paying the full premium of the plan. But the individual can apply for financial assistance in paying for a qualified health plan including that acquired through COBRA through the Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit.
