Temporary Health Insurance in Michigan
Michigan Temporary Health Insurance
And Coverage Retention through COBRA and Conversion Policy

There are a few suitable options for people in Michigan in getting temporary health insurance. This can be bought from private health insurance companies, and there is also a way of getting temporary health insurance in Michigan by retaining your previous group health insurance coverage. The state of Michigan has a few health programs that allow its citizens to keep their previous health coverage. COBRA, State Continuation Coverage and Michigan Conversion Policy are the health coverage retention programs available in Michigan.

Why temporary Health Insurance from Private Health Insurance Companies May Prove Insufficient

People with minimal medical needs may get sufficient coverage from temporary health insurance plans from private health insurance companies. But people who have pre-existing health conditions may not. Most health insurance plans have a pre-existing health condition exclusion applied to any illness or health disorder acquired at least 6 months from the date of membership. This is commonly referred to as a look-back period. A pre-existing health condition exclusion may last for 6 months. But this will depend on the health plan’s policies. Temporary health insurance, on the other hand, will not give any coverage to a pre-existing health condition.

COBRA

COBRA is a federal law that gives employees and their dependents the privilege of choosing to retain their previous group health insurance coverage. Employees that were voluntarily or involuntarily dismissed from a company with 20 or more than employees can elect COBRA. In this case, their dependents can also have the same coverage as to what they had with their previous health plan. The dependents can even elect COBRA as an individual if they had been disqualified for coverage as per plan policies. This includes the dependent’s graduation from college or legal separation from the primary policy holder. In the event of death, the dependents can also elect COBRA to retain their coverage. This is a more suitable way of getting comprehensive health coverage, especially to people with pre-existing health conditions since the same coverage will be provided and no new pre-existing condition exclusion will apply. For people employed in a company with less than 20 employees, they can still retain their group health insurance through State Continuation Coverage. Both retention programs are non-renewable and may only be applicable for limited period of time.

Conversion Policy

Temporary health insurance in Michigan can be obtained through Conversion Policy. People who were covered for at least 3 months by their previous group health insurance plan are eligible to buy health insurance through Conversion Policy but the coverage may be different than the previous plan. But the benefit of using Conversion Policy as a means of getting temporary health insurance in Michigan is that no new pre-existing health condition exclusion can be imposed. And unlike COBRA and state continuation coverage, there is no limitation as to how long the person wants to keep the coverage. But a disadvantage is that there are no definite limits as to how much a person can be charged for the premium.
