COBRA and state continuation coverage is a federal law that has been around for decades now. After losing a job, your employers will notify you of your option to elect COBRA. This is standard procedure. You can also have this arranged before officially leaving your company. Electing COBRA is for people employed in a company with 20 or more employees while state continuation coverage is for people employed to smaller companies. And they will both provide you the same coverage that you had with your previous group health insurance plan, including coverage for a preexisting condition that you were receiving. This will also apply to all of your qualified dependents.


Electing COBRA or state continuation coverage can be very expensive since you will be required to pay for the full cost of the health plan’s premium. If you need financial assistance, you can get this through the Federal Health Coverage Tax Credit. The HCTC will cover 65 percent of any qualified health insurance plan premium, including that which had been acquired through COBRA or state continuation coverage. This can either be directly paid to the insurance company or this can also be received as a tax credit at the end of the year.


Some employers may also allow their dismissed employees to keep their group health insurance coverage for a limited period of time. But you may also have to pay for the full premium.
