Conversion or Retention: Alternative Ways of Getting Short-Term Coverage

A Few Words about Temporary Health Insurance

People in between jobs, dependents who lost their dependent status as per plan policy, part-time employees and early retirees are the common market for temporary health insurance. More and more people have realized the importance of having uninterrupted health coverage. And this is the exact reason why temporary health insurance in Rhode Island is a must-have for people who find themselves temporarily out of health coverage.

The basic coverage of temporary health insurance in Rhode Island may include the same coverage like that of a regular health insurance plan such as hospitalization, diagnostic procedures, physician services, preventive care, and prescription drug benefits. And a few temporary health insurance plans in Rhode Island may even have a more comprehensive coverage than someone’s previous group health insurance plan.

The cost of temporary health insurance plans in Rhode Island will largely depend on the applicant’s choice of coverage and the duration of the plan. Private health insurance companies offer consumers the accessibility and convenience of having to get instant quotes online. This makes price comparison much easier. And just like a typical insurance plan, you can save money on buying in bulk if you have a few dependents and signing up for a longer plan. And for people with no serious medical condition, the plan can have a next-day effectivity date.

But there’s a limitation to everything. Unfortunately, temporary health insurance in Rhode Island is not a suitable solution for everyone in order to temporarily fill the gap in health coverage. Temporary health insurance is not offered to people with preexisting health conditions. But private health insurance companies are not the only place someone can get temporary health insurance in Rhode Island.

The state of Rhode Island has a few other options for people with expensive medical needs. If you were receiving coverage for a preexisting condition from your previous group health insurance coverage and/or you are waiting for a new group health insurance plan’s preexisting condition to be completed, then the right and probably the most suitable option would be to either CONVERT or RETAIN.

CONVERT

The state of Rhode Island’s Conversion Policy allows individuals to convert their previous group health insurance coverage into something they can keep despite them no longer employed to the company that once provided for them. Employees and their dependents who were fully insured in a group health plan can buy individual health insurance through conversion policy. Unless you were still in the process of completing a preexisting condition exclusion from your previous plan, conversion policy will not impose a new preexisting condition exclusion. But there is no limit to what the cost would be. This will largely depend on your age, gender and health condition. But getting immediate coverage for your preexisting health condition is assured.

RETAIN

COBRA and State Continuation Coverage are federal laws that allow people to keep their group health insurance coverage even after being dismissed from work. This is available to both the employee and his dependents. And they can have the same coverage and benefits as their previous group health insurance. And like Conversion Policy, a new preexisting condition exclusion cannot be imposed if the person was already receiving coverage for a preexisting condition.
