Utah Temporary Health Insurance Plans

People who had recently lost their job and their group health insurance coverage; part-time employees; people in between jobs who are waiting for a new group health insurance plan to take them in; early retirees waiting for Medicaid; and dependents who had lost coverage due to graduation from college, legal separation or death of the primary policy holder may find the need to get temporary health insurance.

Temporary health insurance in Utah may either come as a HMO, PPO or a traditional or indemnity type health insurance plan. The only difference that it has from a regular health insurance is the length of the term. It can be as short as 30 days and may be extended for up to a year. The coverage is also no different. A basic temporary health insurance plan may include check-ups and doctor’s office visits, hospitalization and treatment, medical exams and diagnosis such as x-ray and MRI, physician services, and prescription drug benefits.

But getting temporary health insurance in Utah from a private health insurance company to fill in the gap in health coverage may not be the right solution. Unfortunately, temporary health insurance is not offered to people with preexisting health conditions. It will only suit people with minimal health needs.

Utah Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool (HIPUtah)

The HIPUtah is a high-risk pool program that provides health insurance to people with preexisting health conditions, and who had either been refused or given insufficient coverage by a private health insurance company. Anyone who is a resident of Utah for at least 12 months can get health insurance through HIPUtah. Depending on the person’s eligibility, he may not need to face a new preexisting condition exclusion. The cost of the premium may vary depending on the person’s age and the plan that he chooses. This may be between $100 to $800 monthly.

Conversion Policy

Conversion Policy is another method of getting temporary health insurance in Utah. It’s technically buying a new individual health insurance plan from the insurance company that provided your previous group health insurance plan. The benefit of buying temporary health insurance through conversion policy is that you won’t have to face a new preexisting condition exclusion, but a disadvantage is that the cost will be much higher than what you were paying for in your previous group health insurance plan.

COBRA and State Continuation Coverage

If you would rather keep your group health insurance plan even for a limited period of time while you are waiting for a new group health insurance plan to take you in than look for temporary health insurance in Utah, you can either elect COBRA (if you were employed in a company with 20 or more employees) or state continuation coverage (for smaller companies). Through these retention programs, you can keep the same coverage as what you previously had including coverage to a preexisting condition. And even a dependent can individually elect COBRA or state continuation if he loses coverage as per plan policies like graduation and legal separation.
