Temporary Health Insurance in Virginia

The adversities of unemployment after recently losing a job will include having to find a new individual health insurance plan as either a temporary or permanent replacement for the group health insurance coverage provided by your previous employer. People who are expecting a new employer and a new group health insurance plan to take them in will prefer having to buy temporary health insurance in Virginia to fill in the gap in health coverage. Though it may sound very simple, there may be a few cases wherein getting temporary health insurance in Virginia can be quite complicated and buying temporary health insurance from a private health insurance company may not be a suitable solution.

There are a few other people who are in need of temporary health insurance. These are the part-time laborers, people who work contractually and who are always in between jobs, dependents who had been disqualified from getting coverage from a group health insurance due to legal separation, graduation from college, or death of the primary policy holder. And for whatever reason, getting temporary health insurance to keep you covered is necessary to prevent any financial adversities in the future.

From Private Health Insurance Companies

Buying temporary health insurance from private health insurance companies may provide the same coverage as a regular health insurance. Though the cost may still depend on the applicant's health condition, age, and gender, there are a few plans offered that bypass all these qualifiers. But one limitation of temporary health insurance in Virginia that makes not available to everyone is that it's not offered to people with preexisting health conditions. People with expensive medical needs may need to look somewhere else.

People with preexisting health conditions find help from their state's risk pool. This is a state-sponsored program that offers health insurance to people who are categorized as “uninsurable” due to their expensive medical needs. But unfortunately, Virginia does not have one. But the state still has a few alternatives to offer for people looking for temporary health insurance.

Health Coverage Retention Programs and Federal Laws

Sometimes, getting temporary health insurance from private health insurance company may not assure complete and sufficient coverage to someone's medical needs. There are a few retention programs and federal laws that apply in Virginia that gives its citizens the privilege to retain their group health insurance coverage.

* COBRA and state continuation coverage are both federal law that allows employees and their dependents to keep their previous group health insurance coverage for a limited period of time. This is a suitable way of getting temporary health insurance in Virginia for people with preexisting health conditions since private health insurance companies does not offer temporary health insurance to people with high risk of needing medical attention. The person who elects COBRA or state continuation coverage will have the same coverage benefits as what his previous group health insurance plan provided. And this is not limited to the employee alone. Even dependents who had been evoked the right for coverage can elect either COBRA or state continuation to keep his coverage in cases of legal separation, graduation from college, or death of the primary policy holder. The only disadvantage of electing COBRA or state continuation is that it can only be acquired for a limited period of time and the individual needs to pay for the full cost of the premium.

* Conversion policy is basically buying your previous group health insurance coverage from the company that provided it. Unlike COBRA and state continuation, there is no limit to how long the individual can keep the plan. For as long as you pay the premium, you will keep on receiving the same coverage including coverage for a preexisting condition.
